Are you curious about the name J? J is a sailing term that comes from the designation of a measurement rule used in the 1930s when Sir Thomas Lipton’s British gentlemanly fleet faced the American fighting spirit in the America’s Cup race. Sailing experts still believe today that the J-Class yachts are among the world’s best constructed boats!
A historical seamark by the inlet to Stockholm... Tornvillan was built in 1889 by the building contractor Erik Fredlundh. He had made himself a fortune through his building contracts in Stockholm. J´s Tornvilla was his prestigious summer residence with over twenty rooms and three kitchens. Two World Wars came and went, the residence changed owners and was turned into housing for several families.
Eventually it was deserted in the early 1980's. After a complete renovation, which was completed in 2011, the partly historically protected building had been restored to its former glory.
JV Svenson who founded JV Svensson Automobilfabrik in 1899, was a visionary and entrepreneur. But before the production even started, his new Construction Manager suggested that it would be wiser to manufacture motors instead, which lead to the large-scale production of the Avance motor. They were run on paraffin oil and became very popular, being used in locomotives, sawmills, plows, combine harvesters and other machines all over the world. In 1912, JV Svenson was the largest private employer in Sweden with 523 employees. The factory unfortunately did not survive the economic depression in the 1920's and went bankrupt. J.V. Svenson himself got to keep his residence Fabrikörsvillan and lived a continuous happy and good life, by the motto "Unfortunate is only the one who can't bear unfortune".
